Making your own Rub-ons?

Okay... I have been trying and trying and finally a light bulb came on. To anyone that is having problems with beading... are you using a recycled cartridge? I was.. I tried it in all blue and it was perfect. Go figure!

I've also used a page protector when I didn't have a transparency, just cut one down to fit the printer..worked well.

I've used rub-ons on painted slide mounts for a birhtday swap I'm in. They turned out very cute! With all the free fonts available for download, this makes rub-ons an endless possibility!

I use remanufactured cartridges and like the effect that it gives, I have a Lexmark printer and a non working HP. I'd never use the HP unless I wanted a really broken vintage look?

ok. for those who are having probs with beading... what setting are you pringing on? meaning, I just printed off a test and didn't change my print setting to Best and left it on Draft. it came out bad. Try that and see it this will work.

my test was to see if I could get the rubon done quick enough to put white embossing powder on it to make white letters since I want that for a LO I am wanting to work on. didn't quite work. I think I have to let the ink dry to much to get it to rub on with out smerming. I am going to try to try something else and will let you know.

OK so next time I try this it has to be on normal paper setting (not transparency), the paper has to be glossy side up (to be printed on) and on best setting...is that it?

Hey I never thought about embossing it! even so about letting it dry, go over it carefully with your embossing pen and viola!!! I may have to ry that! Thanks girls... Glad you figured it out Ferbie!

This is so cool! My daughter is three and doesn't write yet so for her thank you's for her birthday I found a kids handwriting font I liked. Transfered it on the card and went over it with a marker and it looks like she could have wrote it! Thanks for this info!!!

I tried it with clip-art... it works !! And to sort of give the "impression" of white lettering, I layered my text over the picture and took the color out of it (the text). This way, the words are basically white if you rub it onto white cardstock..... cut it out and use as an embellishment !!

WOW...I am going to have to try this out. LOL...I dont even know what kind of printer I have. It doesn't say on the printer. Its an hp officejet....ah ha...I just tryped the word jet so I have to assume this is an inkjet. Funny how things sometimes just come to you.

I am kinda new to all these techniques. I saw where someone posted that they use a transparency. How do you do that and what type of transparency?
Those rub-ons can be expensive. I would love to be able to cut corners and use the fonts I like.

Any suggestions would be great.

I use microsoft word for this.

1. Type whatever it is you want.
2. When you press print, select "properties"
3. Select "page setup"
4. Select "iron on transfer or mirror image"
5. Then print!
6. Let the transparency sit for a minute or two before you rub it on your paper.

Make sure you use the smooth side of the transparency, that side will allow the ink to just 'sit' on top. If you make a mistake, you can just run water over the transparency and wash off your mistake.

Can I get a transparency at Michael's?

You can get them at wal-mart in the office supplies department or you can go to an office supply store and get them there.

Are you using an ink-jet printer? Will this work with laser?

I'd like to thank the genius who thought of this! I attempted making my first rub on last night, and the results were quite good.

Spikesmom - This will not work on a laser because the ink is set when it comes out of the printer.

Oh my gosh, I had no idea you could make your own rub-ons!! Where have I been lately? Obviously not with it! I can't wait to try this out!! Thanks for sharing this idea ladies!!!

It's very cool! I just started doing it myself. Just a note...you don't get super-crisp lines. It looks more like a stamped image...but definitely worth it! And all you need is one transparency. Keep wiping it off after use and use it again and again!

If you want to get a crisper line, you can trace over your letters with a fine tip marker.

yeah I kinda figured that out...lol.... but who cares!? lol No more buying rub-ons and I was even planning on buying the magnetic stamp set from MM so I could spell out things.... forget that!! lol Thanks so much ladies.

I was sooooo trying to fogure this out... So I used our transparencies here at work with my printer... come to find out my printer is a laser printer... can't wait to get home and try it on my inkjet... thanks so much girls!!!!!!!!

I had noted this before but hadn't tried it until today. I love it! Especially using colors. I found better success with more thin line text. I also am glad that I can use my laser transparencies in the ink jet printer for this method (only) as both sides are shiny. Whereas to make a "transparency overlay" one would definitely need the inkjet transparencies.

This is a great idea. I was looking for rub-ons today and I did not find what I wanted. i am going tomorrow to get the transparencies. SO, I guess colored inks will works too.

I just tried this and it freakin' rocks! I've got 21 packages of MM rubons i've been hoarding... i'll keep the white ones (when i tried to print white it came out clear, with no ink on those letters, like a reverse), but how cool is this?

I got so carried away, i printed out all the journaling and picture labels, even the title of a page and they all came out awesome (except the really skinny letters looked kind of odd).

Try colored ink as well for a neater affect. Works great for slide mounts, to fill in the little window part:)

What version of word are you using? I have to put my text in a word art and flip it to make it work. I have looked all over for the "iron on transfer or mirror image" setting. where else could it be?

also, you can use this tech for clip art too. I haven't tried clip art yet, but I plan to.

when I tried this the ink beaded up. What am I doing wrong?

I had the same thing happen to me last night - this is a great idea and I want to get it to work because I have 60 invitations to make!! I just need the numbers and last night I tried this several times without luck!!

On my printer, the mirror image option is under advanced settings when you click properties next to the name of the printer in the top of the print setup box.

The first time i did it, some of the skinnier parts looked like they were all beaded up, but, when i rubbed them down, they squished together to form the letters?

when I did it the first time, I put my printer on transpercey setting and it beeded and bleed a bit. I then looked on here at the tips section, and it said to NOT print on that setting, but on regular paper setting. I tried that and it came out great.

Hi ladies.. First off.. I'm new to this board. I first learned about this at SBA... since then, I have been looking for more detailed info. You gals really have taught me a lot today. I will have to try all the new tips. I tried last night twice and failed, but I know what I was doing wrong (printed on wrong side and chose transparancy setting). I do have one other question though..

What is your opinion about album safety with this?

I know that most ink jet inks are a/l free. Hope that helps ferbie.

Other than that it is working awesome!

You won't be able to get it to print white...white on the ink choice is just an absence of color (no white ink). I know...that's a bummer!

So I went home and did this! It was great, doesn't work as well on the textured cardstock, but still had a neat effect! I will post a layout later with what I did... Thanks girls...

For those of you haveing problems bleeding, I wish I could help. Other than changing your settings, I don't know what you could do... Good luck in figuring it out.

when you buy ink cartridges it's either black or color--the color is only the primary colors, red blue & yellow...no white...that would be awesome if they made white cartridges huh?!
