Any ideas for sprapbooking a black and white military photo UPDATE

I'm looking for ideas on how to scrapbook this picture. My neighbor who i've known my whole life passed away this last monday and I hadn't seen this pic with Elvis since I was a little kid and got a copy of it from his daughter. It's my Neighbor on the right and Elvis. My neighbors are like family and have always been there for us and this photo is so precious and so I really want to do a good layout.



Are there any new lines of paper you could suggest or certian colors I should use and what would you suggest for embellishments?

I've never scrapped black and white type of photos before.

OMG how fabulous!!! I'd go totally retro and use a kit from the 50's rock n roll type. Journal something like From King to Soldier...he still rocks. Just a suggestion. What a cool thing to do for them.

I have seen some amazing layouts using black and white photos. Don't be intimidated! I recommend creating a layout, but not adhering the photo until you are sure you are satisfied.

Check out the gallery. Choose "gallery" then "photo info" then "color" then "black and white". Tons of great layouts using black and white photos come up, and you can see how they look with a variety of paper combinations.

Wow, that is awesome. I love the 50's idea tht was posted earlier, but the gallery has some great ideas too.

Make sure to post the final layout, so we can see it.

I have another photo from Christmas I wanna do for them with the bo bunny blitzen paper and frame it. I'm so excited to do that lo but need to get in town to get the chipboard embellies to go with it. Kicking myself now for not buying them when I bought the paper.

That is an amazing and special picture! (My youngest son is an Elvis fan and loved it too!) There is something so cool about black and white photos. I am in the process of scrapping a b&w photo of my DS. I found paper by fancy pants that I am loving. The stars might tie in well with the military theme of the pic too. I love black and white photos and would use red in the album as an accent color to make them pop out.

Just a suggestion - be sure and make a copy of that photo. That way if you feel like the LO is "wrong" you won't have ruined the original.

I just printed a copy, the origional is in a lock box probably by now.

I totally understand. We lost our neighbor in Nov. He lived there before I was born so we knew them the same way. They are like family.

I just did a search here in the gallery for Elvis & tons & tons came up so maybe something there will give you ideas. I also searched military too but I think you are trying to go with the elvis theme not military.

Would love to find a way to have a little of both on this page. I little music and a little army. Maybe a little sheet music paper and a little military paper. Maybe some notes. Some inking and distressing.

I think it was Bo Bunny papers. YOu could change the items to things that fit better like a record player instaed of a old fashion one.

Wow what an awesome photo! When I scrap black and white I usually play off the theme of the photo, example, a pic of my aunt from wyoming was done in adobe colors. So for this one I might pull on the Vietnam aspect and go with lush greens-draw on the woods etc. I think whatever you decide to go with it is going to be such a fun page to work on!!

This is deffinately one of the most special i've worked on. My mom was a huge Elvis fan as well as my neighbor and me too. When I was little I told my mom that when I grew up I wanted to marry Elvis.

Wish I could have had a copy of this photo a long time ago and could have scrapped this while my neighbor was still with us. But his family is like family to us!

I just hope I can make it look nice

Maybe the title could be a line from one of his songs...?
(BTW, all of Elvis' oversea duty took place in Germany.)

Here is a record one. You could certainly copy & record online. You can print them as photos that you send to a photo developer. YOu can also print it out on your printer on cardstock & put them on your layout.

YOu knoe the one you like so far that has the black scallop paper behind the stuff? I think it looks like records.

Just a thought - I'm sure you can wander around on the interent and find a lot of Elvis' other army pictures - the one of him getting his haircut is famous and the one of him leaving for the army too. You will find those on Google images although I way prefer Dogpile images - you don't get as much junk you don't want as you do with Google.

Then maybe you can get some pictures of your neighbor (black & whites too or print them in black and white) and put the picture of them in the middle and make a border of smaller pictures alternating Elvis and your neighbor.

Maybe on the bottom for the title, something like "Army Buds"

If you use other shots of Elvis in the army, especially the haircut shot, it will be obvious that Elvis is one of them.

Somewhere journal Elvis and your neighbor's name - and the date if you have it and maybe where it was taken.

Agree with the other suggestion - use Army paper - the army colors will look good on the b&w picture or pictures. Also, I would double or triple mat the main picture. Either army green around the picture, then black or I would mat in black, then a army green mat, then another black mat.

Well no such luck today on my trip to the lss's. I did find a sort of military paper in the color I wanted and some elvis paper but no musical note paper in the color I wanted. I may try HL or M's next time i'm in there.

Don't think the Elvis paper is what i'm going for as I want it to be more about my neighbor than aboug Elvis.

If the other two stores don't have it i'll be ordering from here. lol

What kind of military paper are you looking for? I'm in Hawaii and they have an excellent selection on the base at Pearl Harbor! I'd be happy to pick something up and send it to you if you know what you want.

Slice has an awesome cartridge with musical notes on it. I checked out every Slice and cricut cartride there was and they were so cartoony - finally found the Music and Dance slice cartridge which is wonderful.

There is also an fantastic punch that makes the musical bars and notes all the way across the top or bottom of the page. Forgot who makes it but it is current.

I'm in agreement - I would emphasize the military side more and your neighbor.

My M's and HL have huge sb sections so give me a few weeks to get back in there and see what I can find. lol I did see some really cute bling music notes on here that are so cute. I usually do 2 page lo's but this will be a 1 page lo that i'll make 2 copies of. One for my neighbors family and one for me.

Thank you for the complments Cindy and Linda! The Elvis was so much fun to do. I did them in black and white for the Tupelo days and early days when they were so poor and then went to color for the rest of the Elvis layouts when he had records and movies and was living in Graceland. I wanted a way to divide his Tupelo birthplace where he grew up and Grace Land where he moved when he was famous. Really fun layouts!

I think I was just a few years old and it was during the Aloha from Hawaii concert that was rebroadcast after the concert. Could probably tell you the date that happened too. lol

Not to steal the OP's topic, but if you are in Hawaii I saw your offer for paper for the OP...do they have anything with Pearl Harbor on it?? I would love 2 pieces of pp if so, or anything else...that is the anniversary of my first date with my hubby and we celebrate every year.

I will check - I've bought a lot of Pearl Harbor paper over the years. I'll check the base and Scrapbook Clubhouse. I'mmore likely to find it at the base.

I bought some beautiful Pearl Harbor paper at Island Paperie on the Big Island last year but probably won't go the Big Island again until nex year.

I'll pick up whatever I can find - maybe a few days before I go though - we are on the other end of the island at Bellows Air Force recreational Facility. Whatever I can find - I will get.

What a great photo! I'm currently scrapping a photo of my father in the army in 1945. I've had it printed in sepia and the products I've linked are the ones I'm using. I'm going to the army surplus store to get an old badge, and will put a copy of Dad's service record in the envelope.

Cool idea Henri and love those papers! Can't wait to see it when your done! That's gonna be an extra special lo.

I have a solouette(sp?) shot that a camping buddy took of my dad back in the 70's that i've been wanting to scrap for many many years. Dad's buddy who took the pic entered it in a photo competition that year here in IL and it wond first prize.

Dad was sitting in front of a lake and you can see his pipe.

Looks like my one page lo just turned into a 2 page lo! Check this article out in todays local paper about my neighbor and Elvis!

I finally at least did get the christmas Lo done and posted it in my gallery. Hopefully in a week or two i'll have my taxes and place my order here and i'll have to now double the stuff for this lo. lol

Hoping the papers I picked for this lo will be what I have in my vision for this.
