Anyone use a fireproof safe for album storage??

After reading about Robinzberdz' loss, I got to thinking about what I could do differently in order to increase my chances of saving my photos and albums in case of a fire (or even whole house flooding). My husband has a fridge sized gun-safe that he stores HIS valuables in, so why not me?

I did small bit of research on the subject and found that Fireproof safes really only buy you time in a fire and should more accurately be called "fire-resistant". So then not knowing much about housefires and flooding... would it be worth it?

Here are some safes that I found that would hold all my albums plus still have room for more. I wanna explore this idea some more. Any thoughts?

I put all my negatives and CD's with pictures on them in fireproof safes. At work we talk a lot about off site storage of records when we discuss Business Continuity Planning. I now make copies of my digital pictures (on CD) and have my parents keep them at their house ~ in different state, different climate, etc. I've been now copying theirs and bringing them here. I think I could re-scrap them if something happened by I couldn't recreate the pictures. Albums are so big and bulky and I have so many, I'd have to get a vault! Another thing you could do with your pictures is store them in a safe deposit box at a bank (the negatives/digital images).

I already have most of my digital photos backed up on disks and stored in a safe-deposit box... and I have a very small percentage of some photos and scanned layouts uploaded for online viewing, but that's about all I have done.

Does anyone know if these safes are good protection against total flooding (ala New Orleans style) devastation?

That is everyone's nightmare!!! I still believe in off-site storage: in your bank box, at your sister's house in another state, etc. Do I do this? No, I just worry and enjoy what I have while I have it. But CDs stored offsite is about as safe as you can get.

I have copies of 90% of my pictures on dvd in the bank vault. I also have 100% of my pictures on a portable hard drive.

When I was living in Florida, under the threat of hurricanes, the portable hard drive was always one of the first things to be packed.

i burn a milion copies of my pics and keep wondering about fire-proofing (my pics- my mom and dad's valuble genelogy, and of course- my diarys....)

This has always been my fear also..But honestly any building can burn down so they are not any safer anywhere else right? unless you have several copies floating around out there. But if there was a fire proof safe I will deffinatly be purchasing one!

i dont know about those safes, but our safe says it's waterproof, also in a fire the safe is intended to 'melt' around the seal and fuse shut to protect the contents even more.

I'm in the process of duplicating copies of photos, layouts, scanned documents (birth certificate, social security card, copies of all our current credit cards, etc. I know these wont help as much as the originals but will help us later if need be). I've been scanning in all my layouts, all my pictures, I also have all my parents and my grandmothers pictures so these are also being scanned and copied. I'll keep on back up dvd in our safe and a copy for my parents safe.

The reason there is SO much in my gallery is because I now upload every layout I do. I have my pictures on picture sites, and my layouts on sb.com . So if something happens, not only do I have backups on DVD, but I also have them saved at online business sites.

i was thinking the same thing but if my albums were in a vault or safe then we couldnt enjoy them. they are high up so no flooding damage and if there is a fire, well what can I do. I have all my images saved on a website and on cds, etc so I could always re scrap but like pp said you cant get your pics back
