Paper Quilling - Question

For all you paper quilling experts, I have seen your work in the gallery and have wanted to try this for a long time!

Here's my question:

How do you adhere the paper to cardstock or whatever you want to adhere it to once you've quilled it? Running it through the Xyron would probably not be an option! hee hee

Sara that is a really great tip! I feel like really stupid No more sitting here with my glue pen softly lining the edges. I'll tell you another stupid thing I was doing forever- I love eyelets and use them all of the time, but when I got my little tool kit with all the tools in it, I had no idea how to use any of it and there weren't any instructions so I would take the hole punch and put it where I needed the hole and I'd sit and twist the punch tool back and forth until the hole was there! Man I still have a callus from doing it that way for so long, my hand would just kill me And then one day I am at Walmart and see this little pamplet for beginners so I thought I'd get it for a friend that is just a newbie at scrapping and I started looking through it and saw that I should hit the hole punch with the hammer to punch the hole! duh I am just a dip sometimes I guess. The really sad thing is I've been scrapping for a long time you think I'd get everything by now. LOL

Good tip, Sara. I'll try that next time. I've used glue dots and bits of glue. The problem with the glue dots, though, is when you pull the quilling item away from the glue dot, you have to be careful not to pull the paper out of its shape.

Hey luv2scrapallday, the silly thing I did or didn't do was figure out how to use the extension to the 12" paper trimmers. I never knew why there was this ruler you could slide out from underneath. Little did I realize how much time it would have saved me long ago to measure the paper I'm about to cut. But hey, I still see other scrappers just learning to use it, so maybe I'm not as dense as I thought.

For quilling projects used for greeting cards or wall hangings or just goofing around the Mono is okay, but if I remember correctly it is not a/f. If you are using quilled pieces in your scrapbooks you may need to think about the Mono in the clear bottle with the blue caps top and bottom.

I shouldn't admit this to anyone, because I guess some of you think I might have been scrapping for a while. But, when I went to CKU it was the first time I had ever scrapped anywhere but in my own craft room--which has lots of elbow room, and I use mostly permanently placed tools, like a paper cutter, and I almost always cut with a craft knife and clear ruler. Well, the first time we had to all cut something for a class all of the sudden I heard all this clacking noise, and looked around, and sure enough, they were all using their Fiskars! I felt like such a dunce!

The Tombow Mono Multi liquid glue is Acid Free. I think it's the one that says aqua on the label that isn't.

I use the Tombos Mono Multi Liquid in the green lidded container. It has two ends, the skinny one and the bigger one with the rubber around it that is flat. I use the ruber end, and squeeze out a bit and smear it on a bit of paper so that the glue is spread over the rubber and then dab that on the edge of my quilled paper that is being glued down.

I just took a quilling class a couple of weeks ago, and they recommended the same glue that Sara did - the Mono Multi Liquid (with the green lid). It's white, but dries clear. The instructor said this stuff was great for quilling because it dries fast.

The lss where I took the class was out - but I may have to order some from scrapbook.com...along with that 259 cd that everyone keeps talking about!

I have used the tombo, but my favorite glue for quilling is the "scrappy glue" by magic scraps. It is quick drying, but not too quick, and it is very strong, and it isn't as shiny when it dries (clear) as some clear drying glues (including the tombo), so if you get a bit of excess glue, it doesn't show as much. Obviously, it is af as it is made for use in scrapbooks. To use it, I put a small amount on a wax paper, and apply with a toothpick. When getting ready to adhere the quilled piece to the paper or whatever, I either do the same thing, with the toothpick, or I smear the glue around on the wax paper, place the quilled piece on it, and then adhere it to whatever. Mona, I've seen beginners kits at craft stores for quilling and also at my lss I've seen kits and idea books.

How do I learn to do quilling...or should that be "learn to quill"? whichever it is, how do I learn to do it? Are there books about it that will tell me which kind of paper to use? I love the look it gives but had never thought about putting it on a scrapbook page before.

Your public library probably has books, if you do a search under "paper quilling". Also, there is a book by serendipity paper for quilling in scrapbooks called "Twist it, Twirl it, Tie it, Curl It Idea Book". Like Jen Kirk said your local craft store probably has kits (they are made by Lake City Craft Co.) and include basic directions and paper. You don't have to buy a quilling tool - but to be honest, they are like $3 and make life a lot easier. Do a search on google for "paper quilling" you will probably find everything you need to know there! Have fun ! Amy

Okay, another question for you expert quillers .... once you have them adhered to your pages and you close the book, do they get squashed? How do you keep that from happening? Is it the paper weight ... I mean, does cardstock hold up better than the lighter-weight quilling papers?

I'm hoping I can make it to a class at a new lss in my area on December 3rd. I am so impressed by the work I've seen posted by you wonderful neighbors! You've inspired me.

Have you ever tried to break an egg by squeezing it lengthwise? Impossible, right? and amazing for something so delicate - well, quilling is similar. As long as the paper is equal in width (so be careful if you cut it yourself) once the image is quilled, you can put your hand on it, apply your full weight, and it will not crush. Isn't that great?
