Best ink for stencils

What ink brands do you use for stencils? Should the ink be spray ink or chalk, or some other kind of ink?

"Yes" is the best answer. You can use any ink with stencils. If your stencil is paper (I have some children's stencil art books that I use sometimes) then a wet ink will quickly deteriorate it of course, but the plastic stencils from Crafter's Workshop, Prima, Ranger, etc. can be used with anything. Just depends on the look and the color you want.

All of the above plus Distress inks. Sorry, not helping much are we?

It's up to you though. In my experience mists will run and you won't get a clean look. I like Distress inks best, but you need a good sponge and ideally a craft mat to get the best spread.

The paper you use will also make a difference. Have a play with what you have, and see what different effects you can get. It's fun.

And don't forget you can also use paints, molding paste, gesso, watercolor, and gelatos. The possibilities are endless really!

well, I recently (at an expo in 2012) bought 7 spray inks some are by heidii swapp and most are by dylusions. I of course am using plastic stencils with them and the effects are great!!!

I agree with the above comment regarding clean lines. The distress inks and others applied witha sponge give the sharpest lines. The sprays often run a bit under...but I still use them. Just depends on the look you are going for. Also, adding spray by the layer, as opposed to one heavy application helps the running...as does spraying from futher away from the paper.

If you go with ink, Prima has some great little inks that are really like paint. I use them to cover all kinds of Thickers, chipboard, and stencils.
