Stampin Up wheels

I've been looking at these for years but knowing that I'd need multiple cartridges (on top of ink pads!) just to use the wheel designs in different colors has always kept me from ordering some.

I just sat and looked through the 2012 catalog and again was looking at the wheels. So I decided to look into them more and noticed you can buy empty cartridges and fill with any color you'd like. I also know that Stampin Up sells VersaMark and saw that there is a refill for that. Could you fill the wheel cartridge with the VersaMark and either roll it as a watermark or emboss with a colored powder?

I don't stamp a ton. I should more often but don't. I'd love to get a few wheels but don't want to buy a ton of cartridges for just an occasional use. I'd love to start with the versamark and maybe the black. I was just curious if anyone has actually done this before and does it work well?

Yes, I have several wheels and a total of 6 cartridges for them. and yes you can get any color refill and put that as the cartridge color or versamark. I did not have versamark but used clear emboss pad refill to make one to emboss with. You do need to have some scratch paper handy whey you get them going with ink. other wise you might not get a good clear design the first roll or 2. It takes a little practice to get the right pressure and 'touch' to get the image the way you want it. But the wheels are so nice. I did get one cartridge that takes 2 colors so you get a 2 color rolled design. I did not like that as well as the single color, but that's just me. I'm sure some people get great use of them. But depending what ones you get, you can also use the individual designs as embellishments on projects. I have no regrets about getting the ones I did. I even got some from other companies that fit the stampin up roller

Oh thanks! I'm excited to hear that a versamark should work!! I had a friend who had the wheels so I do know about starting off your design to get the ink going. She used to have a large scrap paper under her card and she'd start 5-6 inches away and start rolling, go up onto her card and then off the other side. Its just been a long time since I've seen them in action because she got rid of all her scrap stuff 2 or so years ago.

One other thing, if you buy the empty cartridges, does it take a lot of ink to fill them and are they something you can clean and use a different color on later? I'm still trying to decide if I want to jump into this. Thanks again!

I have always just rolled my wheels onto the biggest size stampin' up ink pads, is that not an option for you? It is a pain for multiple copies of things but if I am just doing one card or layout I don't see the point of the cartridges. Maybe someone can fill me in?

I've always been told if you're trying to roll it on a 12x12 page as a border, you wont get a full image. It'll run out before you get to the end of the page. So the cartridge keeps it inked at all time so the image is consistent and you can go forever.

Is that not true?!?!

Hmm- I don't know as I have only done 8x8 pages and cards with it so it will be interesting to hear from someone who knows better than I do! I will try to test it out tomorrow to see.

Yes, as long as the ink in the cartridge does not run out, it can go on forever. You do need to keep consistent pressure on it to get the best image.
I don't think it would be very easy to clean the roller and reink with another color, but may be possible. It takes almost 1/4 of a bottle of reinker to get the roller cartridge wet enough to work, but it lasts a long long time as long as you do not leave it uncovered to dry out. Last time I bought a refill bottle I think it cost around $3 for one. But you would be wasting lots of ink if you washed the roller to refill with another color. I used black in one of mine so I could stamp a line and then color in with pencils or chalks. But for cards I did just run the stamp wheel across a stamp pad instead of having ton of cartridges and especially just to do 1 card.. Now I did change color of one cartridge but use a darker color that the one I had originally in there. I rolled it across alot of papers and then added the darker color and rolled a few times, added more ink till it was as dark as I wanted. I think I went like from yellow to red, so the color difference was not huge. Dark ones like navy or black would make a bigger problem I would think.
Not sure what designs you are looking for but I have 2 wheels that are new and I was gonna sell on e-bay. One is a kid sort of wheel with school designs, abc, 123, apple, globe. The other is a vacation type one with passport, beach ball, camera, suitcase, airline tickets... If you want to see a pic and are interested I can take a pic of the paper that covers them so you can see the designs. Otherwise I will put on the auction site at sometime. I was gonna sell them for $4.00 each, they are both made by inkadinkado fit on the roller by stampin up. But I did look and on e-bay there are tons of wheels available. I just have these and thought I would mention it.
Sorry, I forgot to mention, I would be willing to swap the roller(s) for other supplies if you have stuff you want to trade- I can always use card stock, white or off-white. Other stamps, I like cats a lot! or wild animal stamps- bear, deer, birds, moose. Dragons, Wizards, Celtic knotwork designs...if you have stamps you want to trade let me know what designs and maybe they are what I need!
