Getting that 'burned edge' look...

Sorry if this is a repeat question..

I've seen a lot of lo's that have the outer edge look singed/burned.

How do you do this? I'd like to try this in the near future.

I have actually burned the paper with a cigarette, but I don't recommend it--it's smelly & messy! Instead, distress the edge with the side of a scissor blade combined with a few random round punches (if tearing isn't your forte), then slide a yellow/beige ink pad down along it, followed by a brown one. HTH

You could distress the edge of the paper by tearing then ink the edges with a brown/black ink.
Just swipe the ink pad along the edge or use a cosmetic sponge or stipple brush to pounce the ink on.

If you are going to burn it, use a birthday candle and don't let it go up in flames! Do it over the sink just in case you have to turn on the water to put a fire out.

On this lo I just tore the edges and then used 3 colors of brown ink in gradations near the border and then black right on the very edges (applied with a sponge).

yeah, matches will work, but they smell AND the paper on the edges where it burns flakes away. Not pretty after a while. Ink and tearing is much better for the long haul IMO.

try ranger ink -- vintage photo.

or you can use photo editing programs to create that vintage look.

I like using a mix of vintage photo and walnut distress in - the walnut is a deeper shade so I leave that one for the "outside" edges.

These tips are great! I've discovered the beauty of distress ink!!!

Draw a line of water so you have a margin of however wide you want the burn to be. When you burn the paper when the fire gets to the waterline you drew it should stop burning.

yeah i have never tried the matches or candles or cigerette technique to burn, but my fav is to tear the paper and distress the ******** out of it with a dark brown ink. LOVE that look...

I agree....they have many distressing tools out there that help control the tearing or shredding of the paper's edge but I use a pair of scissors and place the paper in the "V" and PULL!

This reminds me of a video I want to film and haven't yet...I've seen painting on lemon juice, then heating it with your heat tool! How cool is that? It will get that burned look.
