I typically cut my 8 1/2 by 11 paper in half to be able to make two cards from it. The problem is, most envelopes are not the right size! I've made a few that were larger - just one sheet of 8 1/2 by 11 paper folded in half. A friend of mine gave me tons of envelopes for those that are the perfect size. I just saw something the other day on the Scrapbooks Etc. website about how to make your own envelopes, so I might give that a try for the smaller sized cards.
Most of the time I'll do one of the standard sizes -- I tend to work from envelope first, to make sure I have one to fit, then build the card. If the idea in my head won't fit an envelope I have, I'll make the envelope.
I picked up a postal scale, which really helps out a lot. Now I rarely have to go to the post office to mail out cards and packages.
The few cards that I had done before I just cut the 8.5x11 paper in half and called it a day. But last night I only had scraps and I had no clue what size to cut it.
I did a smaller card...can't remember the size now but I the envies I have are 4 3/8 x 5 3/4. I think if I did the 8.5x11 cut in half that would fit?

How much was the postal scale? I have a little dinky food scale. i was thinking about just using that
It was around 27 at Walmart, and came with a chart -- though it's possible you can just download a chart from the post office website. I got it mainly because it went up higher than the food scale for weight.

i do the same size cards as you and you need invitation envelopes. Those should be a perfect fit for half a sheet of 8 1/2 x 11 paper folded in half.
Unless, of course, any embellies you have on the cards go over the edges of the card. But if you don't have anything on your card that makes it any bigger invitation size envelopes should be the perfect size.

Awesome! Thanks so much! I had a few envelopes I found in my stash - they must've been invitation envelopes!
I cut mine 10X7 and use the env.to fit.Sometimes I make the entire card = 10x7. other times I use the card of that size and cover the front of it....so, that is cutting paper 5x7 and use the same env. I buy at Walmart, 50 cards and env for about 5$. I am self taught....as are most of you probably, but...maybe it is not "right" to just cover the front of the purchased white card?
Does anyone have a link to a printable envelope template? I have tried to google it, but I dont' really find what I need.......I made a card for a shower, and its 6x6, so now I need an envelope!
:-)
If you go to the Scor Pal website - there is an area to make your own envelopes - any size. There is a formula to use and is shows you exactly how to make them. I have used this several times to make envelopes for "different" Sized cards.
I really like little cards. I do the whole 8.5 x 11 thing too but I love using note card/postcard type of things and folding them in half to make a small card.
The only thing that stinks about that is that I can't find perfect fit envelopes. But they're still cute.
