can and cannot use on shrinky dinks

i got shrinky dinks... yea! so, i know i can use markers and i think crayons... anything else? i think glitter should be all right, but chalks? paint? i'm gonna search to see if there's a tutorial on this site, but i don't remember seeing one. anyway... post if you have input thanks

I've used ink and that's worked well.

Tempera paint burns......yes, I know that from personal experience.

I loved Shrinky DInks as a kid! I have seen the blank sheets in the stores and have beeen tempted to try....how do they work?

Stazon ink pads work well, colored pencils and chalk all work. I just started to play with them and had a ball. If you don't want to splurge on the stazon pads (they are pricey) you can color your stamps with markers and do it that way.

There's a problem with markers. I know from personal experience.
You have to use something that will set with heat. Most markers (unless you're using paint markers) are water based to do not heat-set. Therefore, they never dry.

If you're using the glossy shrink plastic, you can scruff it up with fine sandpaper and definitely use your chalks and watercolor pencils. I think that you'll really like the effects that you get. Remember, that your colors will intensify as the plastic shrinks.

I just experimented with acrylic paints and it worked pretty good! After they came out of the oven and cooled, I covered the front with Diamond Glaze to keep the paint from flaking off. (because it looked like it might - had a peeled paint texture) Take a look in my gallery:

I used paint to foam stamp the accents on the bottom left, cut them out and then cooked 'em. It turned out pretty good and I'll do it again, I'm sure. Good luck!

With markers you need to use alcohol based ones, otherwise it will rub right off and won't dry.

There are also some ink pads you can't use because the ink never dries. I believe it's the encore metallics inks. I usually use chalk or colored pencils when I'm coloring them in. The color will intesify when you shrink so make sure you color accordingly. I really enjoy using it. Have fun when you get it

I saw a really cool technique on Carol Duvall using Shrinky Dink plastic. You make a copy, (toner only), of a picture, then place it face down on plastic. Then pour on some nail polish remover and rub with cloth or paper towel. Then, peel off the paper, and the toner stays on the plastic. When you shrink it, the color intensifies. It looks really cool. I tried it on transparancy plastic (not shrinking of course) and it looked great.

Also, if you are inking and stamping, do not flip it and use both sides. We tried that...doesn't work.

I LOVE shrinky dinks and have been using them for several years now with my stamping. For markers, pigment pens work nicely and anything permanent should be OK. I wouldn't use these on stamps though as they tend to dry fast.

Stamping ink: most archival and permanent inks work well. I prefer Colorbox Fluid Chalk pads and have used them with the peppers I have in my gallery.http://www.scrapbook.com/scrapbook_layouts/showphoto.php/photo/26587/password/0/sort/1/page/5 If you use any dye pads like Memories, I don't recommend sanding the shrink plastic. The ink is pretty wet and will bleed into the scuff marks. In fact, I don't usually sand at all, especially on the transparent plastic. The marks show up. Regular pigment pads are OK, but tend to smear if you're not careful even after being heat set.

I hadn't thought of using paints. Might have to give that a try. Over the holidays I picked up some ink jet plastic. I have no idea if it's the same as the other stuff or not, but I look forward to giving that a try and shrinking some photos.

I just bought some shrink plastic and was so excited to try it out. Now I am TOTALLY frustrated and disappointed!

I apparently bought the wrong kind of shrink plastic. What I bought has instructions for inkjet printing, but it DOES NOT WORK!! I think maybe these are general instructions that are in every package, and I didn't get the inkjet plastic.

My daughter and I played around with some yesterday and had a hard time finding something to color with that wouldn't rub off. Colored pencils didn't even show up on the plastic. Embossing ink rubbed right off. Printing with the inkjet printer was a waste of time--it rubbed right off. (And I did lightly sand it--and, yes, the sand marks show up.) Aghhh!

Sorry to hear your frustrations. I just got some Ink-Jet plastic, but have not yet used it. It says though that there are two sides of the plastic. The side you want to print on is the "sticky, dull" side. (Says to test a corner with slightly wet fingers. Further down it says that if you print on the wrong side, you can just wipe all the ink off.

With shrink plastic that I've used, I've not had a problem with different mediums, I usually stamp my plastic. Have you tried sanding the plastic? Did the embossing ink rub off before you shrank it or after? I know it will rub off before you shrink as it usually needs to be heat set first, and I've even had issues with it rubbing off after too, especially metalics. My favorite inks are the Fluid Chalk pads and Pigment pens. Have you tried chalks? They'll work.

What color plastic are you using? I've had better luck with white and clear than with some of the others too. I hope some of this helps. GOod luck.

My instructions also talked about wetting a corner. I did that, and, frankly, I couldn't tell the difference. I printed on one side. The ink wiped right off, so I tried the other side. Didn't seem to make a difference. I baked it (thinking maybe the ink would "set"), and it rubs off after baking.

I tried embossing ink and baked it. It rubs off after baking.

My Stampin'Up ink works well (but I only have one color of it ).

The plastic I have is clear. And I did try sanding it first.

What's frustrating to me is that I read the package and INTENDED to get the inkjet type. The package is just vague and misleading.

i did it!!! my first time using shrinky dinks! i printed out my words on paper, put the shrinky dink over it and traced with a fine point sharpie, cut it out in the shape of a heart, colored the heart with colored pencil, and outlined it with a silver archival permanent pen so it would look like a tag... then stuck it in the oven (with my parents going, "what are you doing?") and then my mom and i watched it fold and warp and shrink! ooh... it was so fun. and then my sister was so excited at how cute it turned out yea!!!

Clear can be tricky. I never sand it as the lines are very noticible as you discovered. Wow! I can't think of what else to tell you. Looks like you tried all that I would have. Have you tried a sharpie? I guess as a last resort you could take it back.

I have had good luck with 'Stays-on' ink with my stamp pads. also, i found that my heat gun works well to shrink it.... just get something long to hold it still while the gun blows it around.. and dont heat on a plastic table
