Sizzix to cut metal tags from a soda can???

I saw a show on DIY that where the lady had used a piece of a soda can to cut out a die. It didn't actually show her cut it out so I don't know what she used. She only made a comment that she cut it out using the soda can. My question is has anyone use thier sizzix to cut out metal tags? I did an experiement and the sizzix will cut the a tag out of a can but I am concerned that this isnt good for the sizzix. I expect that it will dull the blade after a while. Will it dull it very very quickly or can I make a few and not have to worry? Anyone done this? Should I not do this at all?

i have never done that, but i don't see how it can cause any damage or dull the blade. imo, i think it would help "sharpen" the diecut blade since it's hard metal against soft metal? kwim? i guess, let's just wait and see.....

Well I never thought about it actaully sharpening it. But I guess it makes sense since you can use foil to sharpen a punch.

I was thinking about the sharpening thing myself... And I think there is A thread here somewhere that talks about cutting metal with the sizzix... maybe we should do some research.. if I find anything, I'll let you know.

I have used my sizzix to cut out tags & letters from a soda can and it works great! You can also cut through felt & some fabrics...I also heard you can sharpen your blades by cutting through aluminum foil.

I already searched for an hour before I posted this thread. I searched into threads back into march and hadn't found any in general and back into nov of last year in tips and techniques. None of the subject lines mentioned sizzix and metal in the same line so I didnt read them. I was NOT opening all those to look to see. I only opened ones that might have mentioned what you can use in a sizzix and things like that though. None of them mentioned any side effects of using metal. But hey even if there was a thread, there are enough new people here now that might know something we don't. So I thought I would give it a shot. I guess my next step is to email sizzix to find out from them. But if anyone does find a thread please pm it to my or link it here for everyone. My eyes were starting to cross looking through pages of threads and I could have missed it. Thanks!!

Great idea. I am going to ask my dh and I'll let you know what he thinks. He's pretty smart about stuff like that.

Okay, this is pretty obvious/old news, but you can cut foam with a sizzix and make stamps out of the foam. I've even thought about going to my LSS and punching out a whole alpha and making myself a set of foam stamps.

Noooooooooo.... a soda can !?!?! Great idea !!! OMGosh, my sons drink so much Mountain Dew.... I should take some pics and then use the cans on the lo !!!

Hey... I tried to get the craft foam to go into my sizzix and it won't work for me... it's like it's just a tad too thick... what am I doing wrong ??

p.s. I cut out sheets of metals for scrapbooking all the time with my sizzix and haven't had a prob yet.

Amlynn, I saw that episode too and I almost smacked myself in the head. Now WHY didn't I think of that!!

I could probably get more off of selling soda can tags on ebay then my DH does hauling them off to the scrap yard. Since no one so far has had or knows of any bad side effects, I guess I will keep cutting out tags until I find out differently. Thanks for the help!!!

I didn't know about the soda can...but I have read in a very very very old sizix catalog that you can cut all kinds of metals....your sizzix machine is made to be used by a group of people for millions and millions of cuts...so sharpening is the last thing you have to worry about...but if for some reason your machine seems to be having issues with cutting then it may be the sham...but per Sizzix...877-355-4766 and http://www.sizzix.com, you can cut metal until the cows come home and it won't cause your die to be damaged or defective for years and years and years and millions and millions of cuts...hope that that helps....Tracy
