Jessica   (3 comments, 91 views) Wednesday, 06 December 2006

I didn't know that was her name until someone was talking to her mother while we were all standing on the side of the highway, waiting for help to arrive.

See, earlier this evening I witnessed a terrible car accident.  I was driving to my district commitee scout meeting (remember, I have a hard time saying "NO!" ), and the SUV in front of me loses control.  I see them about to move into the right lane, swerve left, then right, then lose control, do a 360 and start to flip!  The car flipped four times!  I slowed down, moved to the side of the road and called 911.  Why don't I have the local number programmed into my phone?  Anyway, I look in my rearview mirror and see a number of cars pulling over.  I can't get thru...dang 911 so I think about pulling away.  I am gonna be late to my meeting.  But for some reason I decide to stay.  I get out of my car and walk back, afraid of what I might find.

What do I see?  A number of people have stopped, but no one seems to know what to do.  Lots of people on their cells, but no one with the police or CHP or ???  The girl (I later found out she was 16) is in the car, which has righted itself, but she is bleeding.  There is blood all over the outside of the door.  She is scared and someone has given her an extra shirt to stop her arm from bleeding.  A woman asks me if I know what to do.  "She won't put pressure on the wound."   I go and hold her hand....talk to her for a bit.  Jessica is so scared.  She just got her license and her mom is gonna be so mad.

I start walking back to my car to get my first aid kit when someone volunteers some gloves and gauze.  I take them and hold this poor, scared, girls hand until help comes.  As soon as the police show up everyone bugs out.  "No, I didn't see anything." "I don't know what happened."  All of a sudden no one knows, no one saw, no one wants to be involved.

The fireman walks over to me and asks if I am an EMT. "No," I tell him, and he takes over.  The police want to talk to me, as a witness.

Later, after the meeting I get a phone call from the police officer.  He wants to know what I said to the girl?  What did I tell her?  She said that I told her I saw the whole thing, that it wasn't her fault.  I tell the officer what I told him at the scene....it wasn't her fault...."it was an accident!"  The poor thing....she is only 16.  She just got her license.  How do I tell her what I saw?  She was going into shock!  no one could really tell us what it is like to deal with a situation like this in real life at our training.   All I can say is I am glad I had that training.

Wow Nancy! DH has witnessed a car accident - he was really traumatized by it. Thank God you stayed calm and did everything you were supposed to do.

DD's name is Jessica - I'm going to tell her to wear her seat belt everytime she goes out.

Take care - PM me if you want to talk - DH needed to talk about his experience over and over again.

Hugs,

Nancy, you were her Angel last night. I just pray that if my son or daughers ever do have an accident that someone like you would be there to help them in my absence. God Bless you Nancy.
