Most of you know that my son, Sean is midly autistic, he was diagnosed with Pervasive Developmental Disorder about a year and half ago. I knew that he was not typical when he was 1.5 so it's been a long road. He has come so far in so little of time, it's been amazing. Today I am feeling especially vunerable, not because of him but because of me. I thought if anyone is on this same journey they might be thinking the same thing I am thinking....
What could I be doing differently to help you, Sean?
How can I help you express what you want?
How do I comfort you, when I know you are hurt but won't tell me?
Why can't I hear what you are saying when you whisper instead of talk?
How can I be a better mother and friend to you?
Why can't I take the frustration away? Why can't I cure this disorder?????
Ok, so I was watching Medical Increndible on Discovery Health and there was a family where the boy was severely autistic on, and he was 4 or 5 and not talking or giving eye contact. They did some research and found a book called "Son-Rise: The Miracle Continues" by Barry Neil Kaufman and website: http://www.autismtreatmentcenter.org/ and went through this program to help their son. It was so interesting to see the video tapes of how they created the boy's "therapy" room and how the connected to him on emotional level after a while of working with almost all of the time. He kept PROGRESSING!! I have never see a program where the parents and other helpers play with the child in the child's own enviroment and thus develop that emotional connection. He even graduated himself from the program around age 10 or something like that. It was amazing to see him at 11 talking, interacting, like any typical child when the had video tape at him at 5 not even interacting at all. Anyway, to make a long story short, I immediately ordered the book 2-day and I am going to look into this program!
Thought I would share! :)

Sean is the luckiest kid in the world to have you as a mom! It sounds like you found a great resource, and I hope that everything works out well. When I lived in a different town, going to college, there was a family in my neighborhood with a severely autistic daughter. It was difficult to watch, much less deal with... best of luck to you and Sean.

First off, you are an AMAZING Mom to Sean. That is evident in everything you do for him, and in all the layouts you post of him. It's evident in your journaling, and also in your pictures. But more so, it just radiates from you.
Best of luck to you and Sean in your journey!!

Wow, great info. So glad you found it. You are an awesome mother!!! I wanted to pass along the info we spoke about once before...the Doman program...the Institute for the achievement of human potential http://www.iahp.org/ I went to this course and graduated from the program. It is AMAZING...if you have a chance to look into this...your life will change!!! Mine did...I will never think of parenting the way I do now...because of this program. Add this to your resources-above and reap the benefits. I only pass this along because I have done it myself and know how amazing it is! Take care my friend, so glad you found more info. and it is so positive! Sonia

Thank you for being so open and honest about your incredible love for your beautiful son. Those questions are so authentic and really show what kind of mother and person you are. I am humbled and speechless. Both you and your son have been given an incredible gift in each other. My deepest and warmest wishes to both of you.

Hi Pam,
I saw this same program you're talking about and called my brother. They have a 3 yr. old that was diagnosed with Autism 6 months ago. They also are checking into it. I wish you & your family the best of luck. You are a wonderful person and mother! :)

Hi Pam, I haven't been around here much lately. A friend of mine who has an autistic 6 year old son e-mailed me this morning and I thought you might like to see it. (it will probably have to be copy and pasted)
